iomedical engineers work in areas of health care to improve patients'
quality of life.  More specifically, they combine their expertise in
engineering and science, thereby creating solutions to patients' medical
problems.  Using computers, they are able to simulate parts of the human
body, much like video games can simulate flight in a plane.  This technology is
used to design wonders like heart pacemakers, artificial kidneys, valves for
hearts,  joints, and blood vessels.  Things taken for granted, such as
eyeglasses and thermometers, were invented by biomedical engineers.
They also design high-tech devices such as surgical lasers, battery-
powered artificial limbs, and ultrasound, which uses sound waves to
produce an image.

Academic Requirements
A college preparatory diploma is
recommended.  Most biomedical
engineers hold bachelor's degrees
in biomedical engineering; however,
others choose mechanical, electrical,
or chemical engineering with a specialty
in  biomedical engineering.  Either
choice often requires continued
education in master's or doctoral
degree programs

Licensure, Certification and
Registration
Licensure is not required in Georgia.
After three years of experience,
clinical engineers may choose to be
certified by the American College
of Clinical Engineering.
