llnesses, accidents, and birth defects may create poorly-
functioning or non-functioning lungs.  Respiratory therapists,
under the direction of physicians, assist in evaluation, treating, and caring for clients with breathing problems.  They use a great deal of independent judgement to make recommendations to the  health care team regarding patients' respiratory care.  These therapists measure lung function, analyze blood samples for gases, monitor life support equipment, and use equipment that delivers oxygen or enhances breathing.  With the current shortage of respiratory therapists and projected increase in demand, positions in this field are expected to increase more rapidly than other health occupations.
