s the nation continues to experience a lack of adequate health care
providers, the health system depends on nurse practitioners (NPs)
for delivery of holistic quality health care.  NPs are registered nurses who
have advanced educational preparation that qualifies them to assess health
conditions, identify and diagnose problems and develop plans to improve
healthcare outcomes.  NPs conduct health screenings and physical exams,
prescribe tests and medications, and educate patients about their conditions
and the need for preventive activities.  They deliver quality primary care in
diverse settings including underserved areas, rural communities, inner-city
areas, hospitals, clinics, and retail stores.  Some NPs own their own
practices and all are reimbursed for services by the state and federal
government and many insurance companies.  NPs work in collaboration
with physicians and other healthcare providers.
