urse-midwifery is one specialty that a registered nurse may choose.
These nurses are educated in midwifery and receive additional training
in women's health care.  Nurse-midwives provide care for healthy women
before, during, and after childbirth.  During the birthing process, they spend
time with the mother to provide needed emotional and physical support.  They
assist in labor and delivery, help in newborn care, and counsel mothers on
infant growth and future pregnancies.  Nurse-midwives are prized members of
the childbirth team because they offer safe, accessible birth care.  This is
especially true in many rural and inner-city areas with few physicians.  Nurse-
midwifery has helped to reduce infant mortality by providing early care to
pregnant women and by increasing the use of prenatal care facilities.  Nurse-
midwives also provide regular gynecological care including annual visits,

contraception and hormone therapy throughout the woman's lifespan.

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a current

that nurses with diplomas or associate degrees may
gain the extra credits required to enter a master's
program.

Licensure, Certification and

Registered nursing licensure is
required by the Georgia Board of
Nursing.  Certification is available
from the American Midwifery
