edical secretaries, also known as medical office specialists,
perform a variety of administrative duties in order to keep a
medical office running smoothly.  They possess strong computer skills
and knowledge of software applications such as word processing,
data processing, and bookkeeping.  Familiar with medical
terminology, they transcribe dictation, update records, and complete
insurance forms.  Medical secretaries often greet new patients, take
their medical histories, and establish their charts.  They answer phone
calls, schedule appointments, prepare bills, and record payments. 
Speaking another language, such as Spanish, is very helpful in this

career field.

Academic Requirements
A high school diploma or equivalent
is recommended.  A medical secretary
may receive on-the-job training; however,
most seek formal education.  Such programs
last from several months to two years
and lead to certificates, diplomas and
associate degrees.
