ealth care administration is a broad field.  Consequently,
administrators have a wide range of duties.  They can be
specialists or generalists.  Specialists head up specific clinical
departments or services.  Generalists manage an entire facility or
system such as nursing homes, physician practices, hospitals, and
health systems.  They ensure good communication between medical
staff, administration, committees and departments by building teams
and improving processes.  Administrators create a smooth-running
organization with well-planned departments, such as nursing,
marketing and public relations, finance and human resources.  They
develop policies, plan budgets, coordinate space, and plan future
expansions.  They are responsible for the institution's resources
and sound financial standing.  Health care administrators are very
sensitive to local needs and provide services to the communities
they serve.

Academic Requirements
A college preparatory diploma is
required.  Some positions are available
with a bachelor's degree in
business, health policy, or administration;
however, a master's degree in business
administration, health administration,
or public health is the expected degree for
middle to senior positions.
Health care administrators may also earn
doctoral degrees.

Licensure, Certification and
Registration
In Georgia, licensure is required only
for nursing home administrators.  Most
administrators belong to professional
organizations such as the American
College of Health Care Administrators,
the American College of Healthcare
Executives and the American
Association of Homes and Services
for the Aging.  These organizations
have voluntary certification programs
which are often helpful in enhancing
professional standing.
