cupuncture originated in China and has been used for thousands of years
to treat conditions such as hypertension, depression, drug dependencies,
headaches, and a variety of other health problems. It is the placement of very fine
needles into specific points throughout the body. Acupuncturists carefully select
these points based on the patient's symptoms and medical and surgical history.
These individualized treatments promote the flow of energy, known as Qi,
throughout the body. Such methods help remedy symptoms and improve general
well-being. Related procedures that fall into the range of acupuncture treatments
include electro-acupuncture, auriculotherapy, moxibustion, and cupping. These
methods use electrical impulses, ear points, heat and suction, respectively, to
enhance the therapeutic effect. Acupuncturists may also recommend herbal
medicines.
